President Sirleaf Meets Market Women and Other Groups

Zwedru,Grand Gedeh - In continuation of a southeastern marathon, President Ellen Johnson has been holding side consultations with the leadership of various social, ethnic, religious as well as professional associations everywhere she goes.
On Wednesday evening, March 3, following a day-long town-hall meeting with the general population of Zwedru, in Grand Gedeh County, the President held small group meetings at her official residence with representatives of some social and other interest groups.
Among others, the President met with the leadership of the Chiefs who came to greet and welcome her in the County. They were followed by the Traditional Council, the Market Women Association and later, Fula Community leaders. Each group expressed their full support for the national reconstruction and reconciliation programs of the Unity Party government under the leadership of President Sirleaf. The Market Women especially thanked the President for placing their concerns on the national agenda and expressed their appreciation for the many markets constructed in the county.
The leaders of the Fula community told the President that they enjoy a great level of hospitality in the community and said they identify with the President in her efforts to bring development to the nation. The Fula community leaders also spoke of the great level of peace and security they are enjoying in the country in general and in Grand Gedeh in particular, noting that such an atmosphere is important for the development of trade.
President Sirleaf and ministers of her Government continued their cabinet retreat at the Zwedru City Hall Wednesday morning where line ministers and heads of agencies made progress reports on their activities. Among institutions marking presentations were the Ministry of Education, the Bureau of Maritime Affairs, the National Social Security & Welfare Corporation, the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation, the Forestry Development Authority (FDA), and the Liberia Produce Marketing Corporation (LPMC). A draft National Disaster Management policy was also presented to Cabinet.
As part of Wednesday’s activities, the President later toured a number of facilities including the Zwedru Multilateral High School’s Technical Department, the CARR Center for Youth Empowerment, and a midwifery School. The President also dedicated a Ministry of Agriculture building in Zwedru.
The visit to Grand Gedeh continues on Thursday with tours of the Tubman Palace of Correction, a local branch of the Liberia Bank for Development and Investment, the Civil Compound, the offices of the Tiyatien Health Center and the Martha Tubman Memorial Hospital.
The President departs Zwedru on Friday for Tappita, Nimba County where she will dedicate and inspect a number of projects including the Tappita Hospital, the Gbanquoi Peace Hut and a market building in Saclapea.
President Johnson Sirleaf, has meanwhile, dispatched the Minister of Justice, Counselor Christina Tarr, accompanied by Defense Minister Brownie Samukai and Immigration Commissioner Christopher Massaquoi to Voinjama, Lofa County to assess the extent of recent disturbances in the area.
The three officials will meet with community leaders as well as law enforcement officials of the county and report to the President.The visit by the officials is also intended to reassure the people of area and begin a reconciliation process in the County following the incidents last week that led to the loss of lives and properties destroyed.
