Press Statement on the Assassination of Benazir Bhutto

Friday, 28th December 2007
Monrovia, Liberia - President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has received with shock and disbelief news of the assassination of the Former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Mrs. Benazir Bhutto. The President is deeply disturbed and saddened by the events in Pakistan.

The death of Mrs. Bhutto is, indeed, a big blow to women's empowerment throughout the world.

Madam Bhutto epitomized how far and wide women can ascend when given the opportunity.  Indeed, her assassination is not only an affront to democracy but also a big blow to the advancement of women struggling for equal political representation.

Her assassination must be condemned by all peace loving nations and individuals around the world in no uncertain terms.

We call on the Pakistani government to bring to justice the perpetrators and ensure that they face the full weight of the law.

We appeal to the women of Pakistan, and to women the world over, to not be deterred by this barbaric and cowardice act.  It should rather serve as a rallying point to galvanize people to continue pressing for women's representation at all levels.

President Johnson Sirleaf extends heartfelt condolences to the family, the government and people of Pakistan for the irreparable loss.
